By daylight,
It was a perfectly scenic vegetable garden.
Tomato, paddy, guava, the works.
Many a time,
With much deliberation,
You and I would make the long walk
Past the Office, Dairy, Big Banyan Tree,
Until we could smell the manure,
So fresh and heady,
That we needed a minute or two to acclimatise.
By evening,
The perfectly harmless looking patch
Grew ominous by the second.
The birds chirping no longer soothing,
Shrill caws and cackles of otherwise pleasant beings,
Where were the mynahs now?
Why were the ravens circling above us?
The time we were late to get there,
Determined still to pick up a few fresh guavas for later,
What did we see?
What did we see...
Rising from the well behind Veg Garden?
Clear as a sea salp
Formless like amoeba
Why were these useless comparisons from Jayanthi Akka’s Biology lesson in my mind,
As the shapeless being drifted slowly towards us?
Before we blacked out,
Only to be found three days later,
In the bottom of the well.
What did we see?
Rising from the well behind Veg Garden?
Clear as a sea salp
Formless like amoeba
Why were these useless comparisons from Jayanthi Akka’s Biology lesson in my mind,
As the shapeless being drifted slowly towards us?
Before we blacked out,
Only to be found three days later,
In the bottom of the well.
What did we see?
What did we see?
